December 2024
Service
- SELFI Program students collected more than 80 coats and over 100 toys in December for those in need.
- To combat food insecurity, CTE students who are members of the SkillsUSA student organization, conducted a food drive. Proceeds were donated to Sacred Heart Food Pantry and the Street Soldiers Schenectady
- NERIC Information Technology Generalist Trainee Antonio DiSanto was honored with the 2024 Service Commitment Award recognizing his commitment to the BOCES guiding principle of always doing better.
Value
- 60 counselors from more than two dozen school districts visited the CTE – Albany Campus to learn about workforce development and career and technical education offerings for the 2025-26 school year.
- The inaugural NERIC Math Symposium drew more than 150 administrators and students from around the region to learn about the latest trends in math education, attend workshops and hear from a mathematics education professor, while students had the chance to compete in a counting bee.
- EDS Graphic Designer Jennifer Sampson was honored with the 2024 Commitment Award for Value recognizing her work reshaping how we serve BOCES communications clients.
- Health-Safety-Risk hosted a virtual workshop for regional School Resource Officers on Swatting Threats, with partners from the FBI offices in Albany and Boston presenting. District administrators will attend a similar workshop in Q3.
Excellence
- An impressive 16 awards for work submitted to the annual New York School Public Relations Association’s (NYSPRA) communications contest were awarded to members of EDS. The winning projects, ranging from written works to videos and graphic designs, were selected from hundreds of contest entries from across the state.
- Seventy-two students in the CTE Culinary Arts and Hospitality Technology and Food Services programs collaborated to bake hundreds of cookies, which Maywood Academy students decorated during the holiday season. This is the third annual collaboration of CTE and Special Education students.
Improvement
- At a ribbon-cutting ceremony more than 100 dignitaries, educators and students celebrated the completion of a year-long capital project that renovated labs and classrooms at the CTE – Schoharie Campus. The project allowed for upgrades to classrooms, new equipment and ventilation systems and the expansion of the Welding and Metal Fabrication program to the Schoharie Campus.
- Shared Food Services growth continues. Supporting 34 districts, they served 2.2 million lunches in the first three months of the school year.
Leadership
- More than 500 education professionals, school technology experts and students from across the state gathered at NERIC’s 35th annual Tech Awareness Day to learn about the latest innovation and inclusive tools that enhance school operations and support educators in enriching the learning experience.
- Nearly two dozen businesses, unions and governmental agencies helped highlight career opportunities during CTE’s annual Careers in Construction Month celebration.
- The inaugural NERIC Math Symposium drew more than 150 administrators and students from around the region to learn about the latest trends in math education, attend workshops and hear from a mathematics education professor. Students even had the chance to compete in a counting bee.
