Nearly one dozen Capital Region BOCES students earned medals at the New York state SkillsUSA competition April 23-25, including several who won state championships.
The students won the medals competing against more than 3,000 other students in numerous work-place skills competitions, ranging from welding and nursing to cooking and machining.
The awards were announced Friday at the conclusion of the three-day competition at the state fairgrounds in Syracuse, which, according to Debra Toy, a SkillsUSA regional officer and a social worker at Capital Region BOCES, was the “largest ever competition at the state level.”

The Gold medalists advance to the national SkillsUSA competition in Atlanta in June. (The Quiz Bowl team, however, does not advance because there is no national competition for that event).
Also, during the competition and conference in Syracuse, two Capital Region BOCES students were elected to statewide office in the SkillsUSA organization. They are Elena Hymes, a Criminal Justice student from North Colonie, and Malachi Plaza, a Automotive Trades Technology student from BHBL. Both students were elected by the organization’s House of Delegates.
Additionally receiving honors at the state gathering was the Albany Career and Technical Education Center SkillsUSA chapter, which was awarded a Chapter of Distinction honor for its activities and student involvement.
“We are all extremely pleased with the success of our students and the SkillsUSA chapters on both campuses,” Toy said.
