September 2024
Service
- 130+ adults are pursuing a career in nursing by enrolling in the Capital Region BOCES Adult Practical Nursing program.
- 500+ CTE students explored careers at the National Grid Touch a Truck and Career Day, learning how their BOCES training makes them viable job candidates.
- 104 Fully Virtual students and 123 Virtual Teaching Services students began learning remotely in the fourth year of our Cooperative Virtual Learning Academy.
- More than 860 high school students attended two BOCES summer school sites to work toward earning essential course credits.
- The Shared Food Service program served 10,000 ears of corn in September, which was sourced from Dagele Brothers Farm, Florida, N.Y., as part of the Farm-to-School initiative.
Value
- 1,400 area students, from more than two dozen schools, began Career & Technical Education programs, to prepare for in-demand careers in the skilled trades.
- 30+ area superintendents learned at NERIC’s summer retreat on such timely topics and trends as cybersecurity, AI, virtual learning and more.
- This summer, 24 8th and 9th grade students expanded their knowledge and skills through the Summer Enrichment Program.
- In partnership with Watervliet and Menands schools, the summer Cars & Chemistry camp gave future inventors the chance to build and race RC cars, conduct chemistry experiments and use 3D printing.
- The new Tuition-Eligible Student Address Confirmation program assists school districts to verify residency of students who have relocated or transitioned, saving valuable resources.
Excellence
- Transportation Assistant Alisha Williams recognized for remarkable leadership and going the “Extra Mile.”
- 83 adult learners earn High School Equivalency, English as a Second Language and Career and Technical Education credentials.
- NYSUT President Melinda Person toured the Albany Campus to learn how partnerships between CTE and Special Ed and area businesses provide students with workforce opportunities.
Improvement
- Construction of the new 46,000 sq. ft. Career & Technical Education Extension Center – Albany, begins, allowing for the growth and expansion of programs.
- 43 educators joined a year-long cohort focused on equitable grading practices, to develop a long-term plan for transforming grading practices by examining key elements of effective systemic change
- $19,000 grant secured for the Village of Ravena to make improvements to Mosher Park, including the installation of a lift at the park pool to assist individuals with mobility challenges.
Leadership
- Virginia Bond, a NERIC Training Specialist, was honored as a 2024-25 Community Leader by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).
- The Offshore Wind Career Pathway program provides Adult Education students with technical training and work experience in welding, electrical, or building trades, to meet the demands of the innovative offshore wind industry.
- BOCES hosts the NYS Blue Ribbon Commission Ambassador Forums to gather feedback on graduation recommendations, shaping the future of New York’s education system.
- Educators gathered for a focused PD workshop on cultural proficiency and its impact on instruction, highlighting the importance of meaningful interactions in the classroom.
