Area salons and businesses will take part in a national Career and Technical Education Month event designed to match Capital Region BOCES Cosmetology students with prospective employers.
The Feb.3 event has drawn the interest of salons—such as Grit and Grace Salon in Latham—who are interested in recruiting the approximately 100 students enrolled in the two-year Cosmetology program.
The third annual event runs from 8:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. on the Career and Technical Education Center – Albany Campus, which is located at 925B Watervliet-Shaker Road, Albany, NY.
Dozens, if not hundreds, of area cosmetologists got their start at Capital Region BOCES and recent career fairs have helped match students with salons.
Class of 2012 Cosmetology program graduate Jackie (Paratore) Fish last school year that “BOCES was life-changing for me, and it’s very important in terms of introducing students to, and preparing them for, the workforce.”
Fish made the comments when visiting BOCES to celebrate her salon’s hiring of Class of 2024 Cosmetology program graduate Aniella Kennedy.
Senior Anthony Martin is among the current crop of aspiring cosmetologists preparing for a career in the industry.
“I am going to jump right into the salons when I graduate,” he said. “I love coloring and extensions and making people feel good about themselves.”
Capital Region BOCES works with more than 300 business, unions and education partners to help fuel the regional and state economies. Through these partnerships, students are able to launch careers directly out of high school or land jobs that will help them pay for future educational opportunities.
Many of these partners will take place in career fairs BOCES will host later this school year. Those events are scheduled for:
- March 26 – Schoharie Career and Technical Education Center Career Fair, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Schoharie Campus located at 174 State Route 30A in Schoharie, N.Y.
- April 2 – Albany Career and Technical Education Center Career Fair, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Albany Campus.
- April 10 – Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) Career Fair, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Albany Campus.
- May 21 – Adult Health Careers Career Fair, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the BOCES Administrative Building, 900 Watervliet-Shaker Road, Albany.
