Capital Region BOCES is proud to welcome Karen Swain as its new Assistant District Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction. Swain, an esteemed educational leader with extensive experience in educational administration and teaching, joined the BOCES in July 2023.
Before joining BOCES, she served as the Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction at the Scotia-Glenville Central School District for ten years. There, Swain made significant contributions to the district’s educational programs, fostering continuous improvement, and student-centered learning, with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Before her tenure in Scotia-Glenville, Swain worked for fourteen years at the Schenectady City School District, starting as a classroom teacher and becoming the Assistant Director for Planning and Accountability. During this time, she developed a passion for utilizing data analysis and monitoring to empower educators, support students, and enhance teaching and learning experiences.
With a foundation rooted in her fourteen years of experience at the Schenectady City School District, Swain understands the value of data analysis and monitoring to enhance teaching and learning experiences. However, she also recognizes that education is ultimately about people. She believes in pulling forward the strengths of educators and providing them with the necessary support to create an environment where every student and educator can thrive.
In her role as the Assistant District Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction, Swain leads the instructional and operational departments at Capital Region BOCES. She oversees BOCES special education, career and technical education programs, and the Educational Support Services division. By focusing on the unique strengths of everyone within these departments, she fosters collaboration and teamwork to drive student success.
She will work closely with Lauren Gemmill, who was appointed District Superintendent of the BOCES in May 2023.
