Manager of Shared Food Service Programs (BOCES)

Basic Function:
Incumbent of this position has charge of supervising the process of sourcing and purchasing food for the food services operation within Capital Region BOCES’s Shared Food Service Programs. These duties involve responsibility for administering the purchasing of food and resources for the large-scale food service program at school districts that participate in the service. The work is performed under the general direction of the Director of Shared Food Service Programs (BOCES). Supervision is exercised over all food service personnel and other non-food related personnel at participating districts. Does related work as required.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with at least a Bachelor’s degree in Food Service Administration, Nutrition or a closely related field and three (3) years of food service experience in an institutional setting plus two (2) years of professional experience as a food broker (for a total of five (5) years), one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity; OR,
- Graduation from a regionally accredited or NYS registered college or university with an Associate’s degree in Food Service Administration, Nutrition or a closely related field and five (5) years of food service experience in an institutional setting plus four (4) years of professional experience as a food broker (for a total of nine (9) years), one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory capacity.
Vacancies are filled by certified list provided by Albany County Civil Service. Should no certified list be available, candidates appointed to this position will be serving in a provisional appointment in accordance with New York State Civil Service Law. The candidate must successfully complete a competitive examination and be eligible for appointment in accordance with Civil Service Law and the Civil Service Rules for Albany County to obtain a permanent appointment.
Responsibilities:
- Directs all phases of the food service operation to assure adequate and efficient food service for students and employees at participating districts.
- Enforces policies and procedures for the food service program at participating school districts.
- Assists in the preparation and maintenance of the food service budget at participating school districts.
- Evaluates quality, price and availability of food from various suppliers.
- Establishes and maintains working relationships with various suppliers.
- Ensures that all procured food items meet the required quality standards and specifications.
- Plans, directs and participates in the in-service training programs including orientation of new personnel and continuing staff development at participating school districts.
- Makes routine inspections of the food service operation for compliance with state, federal and facility regulations at participating school districts.
- Recommends the purchases of new equipment and the repairing of equipment to the Director of Shared Food Service Programs (BOCES) and administration of participating school districts.
- Is responsible for the maintenance of sanitary hygiene of the food service program at participating school districts.
- Coordinates the food service operation with other services at participating school districts.
- Is responsible for maintenance of records and prepares reports for participating school districts.
- Consults with Dietitian regarding special diet menus.
- Good knowledge of modern methods, materials and appliances used in large-scale food preparation and service.
- Good knowledge of the sanitary aspects of food preparation and service.
- Good knowledge of food values and costs.
- Good knowledge of local and regional distributors for food sourcing and procurement.
- Ability to initiate, manage and maintain working relationships with various distributors.
- Ability to oversee and coordinate work within multiple sites and operations.
- Ability to plan and direct the work of others.
- Good judgment; ability to plan and direct a large-scale food service operation.
- Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Starting Salary:
$61,407 - $101,520 prorated to amount of service rendered
