Schools with pools should be aware of latest safety requirement

An updated pool regulation requires that single drain pools be upgraded to include a suction release valve by May 28, 2012.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recently voted to change its guidelines regarding how aquatic facility operators comply with the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. Now, to comply with the law aimed at preventing suction entrapment in pool drains, public pools with a single main drain must have a back-up system capable of shutting the drain's suction.

The law is the result of a June 2002 tragedy, in which a seven-year-old Maryland girl was accidently entrapped at the bottom of a pool due to the suctioning of the spa's main drain during a pool party. The youngster later died.
