Bloodborne pathogens training and other mandatory trainings available online for districts

Capital Region BOCES Heath/Safety/Risk Management staff recognize that time is valuable, and sometimes there just aren't enough hours in a day to complete necessary tasks. That is why Risk staff members developed online training modules for mandatory safety trainings for busy school district employees.

In addition to online HazCom trainings, districts participating in the 2011-2012 Heath/Safety/Risk Management Program can now receive online Bloodborne pathogens training. School employees can complete the trainings, when it is convenient. It also allows district officials to more easily track which employees have completed the required trainings.

The Risk Management service also has the ability to customize specific training modules at the request of school districts.

We will always offer in-person trainings for school district staff,” said Program Manager Kristin Bucciferro, “but this offers districts more training options for different employee groups and is designed to accommodate the needs of schools.

Safety Specialist Jennifer Bennett and Safety Coordinator Cynthia Holmes received training through NERIC in the use of software (Breeze/Connect) that allows PowerPoint presentations to be accessed through the BOCES website for the bloodborne pathogens training. This training is geared toward school nurses, custodians and other employees who have to provide first aid and/or handle or clean up blood or other potentially infectious bodily fluids while on the job.

Bennett and Holmes created the training slides and piloted the online program with school nurses last winter. Over the summer, the rest of the health, safety and risk staff were trained how to use the software, so they can work with their districts and add district-specific details to ensure compliance with applicable laws.

More online courses will be provided on additional course topics, such as a new and improved online HazCom/Right-to-Know course.
