The Short Term Education Program, (STEP), at the Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical School provides academic and behavioral change support for students in grades 6 to 12 who have had discipline problems. Students are generally referred to the program as an alternative to an out-of-school suspension.

Designed to intervene and modify student behaviors so students can return to school as productive school citizens, the STEP classroom is staffed with a certified teacher. A maximum of 15 students are served each day in the classroom. Students complete academic work assigned by their home school teachers and work on assignments associated with their infraction.

STEP is held on the Career & Technical School’s Albany campus in a classroom apart from mainstream activity. Students are required to stay in the classroom all day (8 a.m.—1:34 p.m. with a lunch break from 10:35—11:10. Students may purchase lunch). They progress individually and receive teacher support and instruction as needed. STEP also provides counseling and referral services.

2010-11 Pricing: $10,600 per student slot, or $85 per day, scheduled in no less than two-day intervals

STEP is BOCES aidable
