New Visions is the college advantage - Save the date and join us at our Open Houses

Do you know a college-bound high school junior interested in medicine, journalism or law who'd like to get jump on his or her studies and a proven advantage for college applications? Learn more at New Visions Open Houses at Career & Tech's Albany campus, room B4, 8:30-10:30 a.m., Feb. 13 for New Visions: Health Careers, Feb. 14 for New Visions: Journalism & Media Studies, Feb. 15 for New Visions: Law & Government.

Feb. 16 is a snow date for any postponed open houses. An evening Open House for all programs also will be held on March 7, from 6:30 - 8 p.m. at the same location. New Visions programs offer high school seniors unmatched, first-hand experiences for which most students have to wait until college, grad school or even med school. learn more! Students at some high schools may also be able to apply to New Visions programs offered by Questar III BOCES. Those interested should talk to their high school guidance counselor.  Questar III's New Visions Open Houses/Parent Information sessions will be held on Jan. 18 and Feb. 1.

 

New Visions: Law & Government students get a rare glimpse behind the scenes

"Judges spend no shortage of time addressing teenagers in their courtrooms. Usually it is because the teens have been charged with some sort of felony. But Monday offered a rare exception in the courtroom of acting Supreme Court Justice Dan Lamont The judge of 32 years held an impromptu question-and-answer session with nearly a dozen high-school seniors who were part of the Albany-based New Visions and Law Government program. New Visions: Health students view movie Contagion with Questar III BOCES peers
Contagious learning - Mr. Paravella's and Mr. Slovic's New Visions: Health Careers students joined recently with their peers from Questar III BOCES' New Visions: Scientific Research and World Health class to view the moving Contagion at a local cineplex.

 

Working on a 'Central' identity -Young urbanite is leading push to bring home pride to lower Central Avenue "Albany - At street level, lower Central Avenue is a melange of clothing stores, check-cashing businesses and sweet-smelling ethnic eateries. They make up the graying, modern face of "The Avenue," once the city's busiest commercial strip. It is not much of a neighborhood in the traditional sense. There are no parks, and virtually no green space or even houses. But efforts are under way to give those who do call Central Avenue home a greater voice in what their neighborhood is and should be. Among them is Judd Krasher, a 23-year-old University at Albany graduate who moved to Central by happenstance in early August and is now spearheading the formation of the Lower Central Avenue Neighborhood Association." 9/11 anniversary inspires reflections on life, government, liberty by New Visions: Law & Government students

They may have been small children at the time, but the events of 9/11/2001 still had great impact upon the lives and thoughts of the high school seniors in Rich Bader’s New Visions: Law & Government class. With the State Museum’s "The World Trade Center: Rescue Recovery Response" exhibition as their backdrop, the students read essays they’ve written about 9/11 on Monday, Sept. 12 at the museum. read the news release (pdf)   read the Daily Gazette article

New Visions class aces U.S. Government & Politics AP exam

Ninety-two percent of the students in Mr. Bader’s New Visions: Law & Government class who took the May 2011 Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. Government & Politics exam received a score of “3/qualified or higher, with three of the six students earning the top score of 5/extremely well qualified, which is four times the rate of students taking the test worldwide. full story

 

Scoop the TU mascot has a strong defense in New Visions: Journalism & Media Studies class

News gathering is a serious business, but journalists have a sense of humor, too, as evidenced by some good-natured rivalry between the Times Union and Daily Gazette regarding their mascots, Scoop and Newsie, respectively. Career & Tech's New Visions: Journalism & Media Studies class rushed to the defense of Scoop in their High School Blog in the Times Union, which hosts their program. New Visions: Law & Government class takes in rare White House tour, Supreme Court, cycling along Potomac

It helps to know someone in the White House, especially if you're a student in Career & Tech's New Visions: Law & Government class. Their recent trip to Washington, D.C. featured a rare tour of the West Wing, as well as session at the U.S. Supreme Court and a meeting with Justice Alito's law clerk, a group photo with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand's staff, a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, and a 20-mile bicycle trip along the Potomac River to visit Mount Vernon. full story

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

New Visions students learn ASLNew Visions classes team up to learn American Sign Language

Students in Ms. Scherer's New Visions: Human Services & Special/Elementary Education class welcomed their peers in Mr. Paravella's New Visions: Health Careers class to join them in learning American Sign Language (ASL). They are being taught by Bev Rosen, a former BOCES educator who now teaches for Schenectady County Community College, which is also granting them credit. [Spring 2011]

Although their locations were near opposites: a spacious, formal hearing room at the State Education Building in Albany vs. a simply furnished classroom at Brookwood Secure Facility in Claverack, the students’ command of the U.S. Constitution was equally evident, when New Visions: Law & Government and Brookwood teams were video linked for  mock Congressional hearings as part of a “We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution” event.

 

 

New Visions: Health student profiled by YNN as a winner, on the field and off

Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk senior Matt McCauslin, a student in Tom Slovic's New Visions: Health Careers class at St. Peter's Hospital who completed the Nurse Assistant program at Career & Tech last school year, is a winner on and off the football field, tennis court and bowling alley lanes. Media covers 9/11 reflections of New Visions: Law & Government class

They were only in third grade on 9/11/2001, but students in Career & Tech's New Visions: Law & Government class had a lot to reflect upon during an event covered by several local media. On Friday,  Sept. 10, with the New York State Museum’s World Trade Center exhibit as their backdrop, the students read essays they penned about the impact of 9/11 on their lives. FULL STORY

 

 

New Visions: Law & Government Class of 2010 aces AP exam, clobbers average pass rate

Eight of 13 students in Career & Tech's New Visions: Law & Government Class of 2010 achieved the top score of 5: extremely well qualified on the U.S. Government & Politics Advanced Placement exam, far exceeding the national average. Twelve students scored high enough to be categorized by the College Board, which grades the exam, as qualified, well qualified or extremely well qualified. FULL STORY

New Visions: Human Services & Special/Elementary Education student Ashley Ten Eyck was named valedictorian for the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk High School and led the Class of 2010 graduation ceremony on June 26. Full Story

Many human services agencies are not-for-profit and actively fund raise. Students in Happy Scherer's New Visions: Human Services & Special/Elementary Education program learned about foundations and fund-raising from Wildwood Foundation Director Mark Woroby, and put their new knowledge into action. New Visions teacher to be feted at U Albany after being named "most influential person" by former student

Dorothy Negri, now-retired teacher of Career & Tech's New Visions: Health Careers program at St. Peter's Hospital, will be honored on May 8 by The Honors College at the University at Albany as the most influential person in a former student's high school academic life. Negri was cited by New Visions: Health Careers alumna Erika Kneeland, who studied with her while a senior at Tamarac High School.

 

From Capitol to Capitol

Students from the New Visions: Law & Government class make the program's 10th annual trip to Washington, D.C. May 16-20. They'll attend a session of the U.S. Supreme Court and meet with Clerk of the Court and former Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Army General William Suter, and with a law clerk to Justice Sonia Sotomayor. The students also will have a White House meeting with Daniella Leger, the President's director of message events. They'll attend sessions of both the Senate and the House of Representatives and meet with several different Congressman at the Capitol.
