Health Careers Courses & Programs of Study

Eleven of the Capital Region’s 25 largest private sector employers are in the medical field,
according to The Business Review.

Fifteen of the nation’s top 25 fastest growing careers are in the medical or health-related fields,
according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The Capital Region BOCES Career & Technical School offers a range of health and medical-related courses of study for adults and high school students. Health Careers & Services Center at Rosewood Plaza, across from our Albany campus, serves a central source of information on great healthcare opportunities for students of all ages.

The following are brief descriptions of programs of study and links for more information.

Are you an adult seeking to change, enhance or start a great career? One of the fastest growing and highest demand jobs in the nation, nursing is the career of ambitious men and women looking for a challenge with many rewards. The state-approved  Practical Nursing program at the Capital Region Career & Technical School encompasses 1,100 hours of classroom and clinical study and practice. Upon completion, students are eligible to take the NCLEX Practical Nursing examination for licensure to become Licensed Practical Nurses.

The program covers all levels of patient care and provides hands-on, supervised clinical experiences at local health care facilities. Students are also given a solid foundation to pursue advanced college training and climb the nursing career ladder. Satisfactory completion of an entrance exam is required for enrollment.

Are you an adult interested in becoming a Certified Nurse Assistant? The Nurse Assistant for Adult Students program encompasses 120 hours of classroom and clinical instruction as required by New York State. The program is a great starting place for individuals who would like to work as a supportive caregiver in a health care setting or pursue further education in Practical Nursing or other health-related
disciplines.

High school students interested in becoming a Certified Nurse Assistant may enroll in the Nurse Assistant program that runs from September through June at the Albany campus.

Medical and healthcare-related offices need experienced and educated professionals. High school students who would like to explore careers in medical and office settings, and who are also seeking an alternative learning pace, including those with individualized educational programs (IEP), may be interested in the Office Operations/Health Services program at the Albany campus. Besides providing an introduction to many rewarding jobs, this program can be preparation for the Administrative & Medical Office Assistant (AMOA) program at the Albany campus.

College-bound high school juniors interested in medicine and health professions should check out our New Visions: Health Careers program. If offers experiences you just can't get anywhere else and is a proven advantage on your transcript and college applications.
